Eugene Hütz – Gogol Bordello

Eugene Hutz Gogol Bordello

Here’s my take on Eugene Hütz, the lead singer for the super awesome gypsy punk rock band Gogol Bordello. The sketch was done with a brown Crayola marker and colored in Photoshop.

Here’s a video of the band on Letterman. I had never heard of them until I happened to catch this performance late one night when nothing else was on TV. I’m glad I did. I saw them live at First Ave in Minneapolis and they were amazing:

Terrell Owens Popcorn Caricature

Put your popcorn away. Terrell Owens was released from the Cowboys on Wednesday, ending a 3 year circus in Dallas. But as we all know, the circus will move on. I give Jerry Jones props for making the move, but from a fans perspective, not having TO in a Cowboys uniform next season is going to be a let down.

Tim Lincecum Sketch

Tim Lincecum San Francisco Giants

Here’s a sketch of San Francisco Giants’ superstar hurler, Tim Lincecum. He won the Cy Young in 2008, and is a front runner for the award again for the 2009 season. Which brings me to this question… What takes Major League Baseball so long to decide upon and announce the major award winners? Hasn’t the season been over for nearly two weeks already? The MVP of the NBA is usually announced a week or two into the playoffs, well before the champion is crowned.

It seems a little ridiculous considering there are usually only two or three guys who are legitimate contenders for each award. Or, in the case of the AL MVP, only one. If Joe Mauer doesn’t win that award, something is seriously wrong. Although it’s probable that one or two knot-headed members of the voting committee may decide to vote for someone else just so the final decision isn’t unanimous, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was unanimous in the end because of the amazing numbers Mauer put up while helping the Twins erase a formidable division deficit and leading them to the playoffs.

GregHalbert.com #1 on Google!

I will often type in various search queries related to my site into Google to see how my site ranks. I was very shocked a few days ago to see my site on top of the search results for the search term “caricature artist”! According to the Google Keyword Tool, this exact phrase is searched for around 8,100 times a month on average. Looks like all the work I’ve been doing recently trying to optimize my site is finally starting to pay off!

Digital Caricature Painting in Photoshop Tutorial

Here are the basic steps I use when creating a black and white digital painting in Photoshop:

Step 1: Create the sketch

This is the most important part of the process. Without a good sketch, the final product will never look right no matter how good of a painter you are.

Step-1

Step 2: Add a background

First, set the sketch layer’s blending mode to multiply. Then, create a new layer and place it below the sketch layer. Fill that layer with gray. Finally, choose a slightly lighter shade of gray and use the gradient tool to create a subtle gradient from the top-right corner to the bottom left corner.

Step-2

Kevin Garnett Quick Digital Painting

Kevin Garnett Caricature

I was browsing through some folders on my computer the other night, and found this illustration which I had started about four years ago but never finished. This was a pencil sketch which I scanned into Photshop and applied a quick coloring job to. The plan for this illustration was to have KG staring down a snarling wolf. Some of the details in the painting would definitely need touching up if I decide to turn it into a portfolio piece, but I do like the overall looseness of both the sketch and the color.

I actually started a few different drawings of Kevin Garnett because I was determined to add a caricature of my favorite athlete to my portfolio. Below is the version I ended up finalizing into a polished illustration.

Shaq calls Chris Bosh the RuPaul of big men

Note: This is a reposting from my old blog on March 5, 2009.

Chris Bosh RuPaul

Things have gotten bad for Chris Bosh. Not too long ago, he was opening eyes with his stellar play in the Olympics, helping team USA capture gold. It’s been all down-hill since. Toronto entered the season with high expectations, but now reside at the bottom of the Eastern Conference (ahead of only a Gilbert-less Wizards team), he has struggled with injuries all season and most recently, was called out by Shaquille O’Neal. After Shaq’s dominating 45 point effort against the Raptors, Bosh complained that Shaq was allowed to camp out in the lane all night. O’Neal fired back with this doozy:

“I heard what Chris Bosh said, and that’s strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men. I’m going to do the same thing (in their next meeting) I did before – make him quit. Make ‘em quit and complain. It’s what I do.”
